Experimental Virology
HPI
The Heinrich Pette Institute Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI) is committed to the research of the biology of different human viruses, the pathogensis of viral diseases, the physiological defense reaction of organisms, and associated problems.
Its goal is to establish novel approaches to improve therapeutic and diagnostic procedures for viral diseases and viral-associated tumors.
The scientists at HPI perform biomedical research on a broad spectrum of viruses, such as Hepatitis viruses (HPV, HCV), Herpes viruses (HSV1, HSV2, EBV, KSHV), and retroviruses including leukemia (HTLV-1, MLV), immune deficiencies (HIV) and DNA tumor viruses (Adeno viruses, SV40). The practical application of these results for diagnostic and therapeutic uses is gaining increasingly in significance. This is reflected in the many cooperative ventures with clinical institutes and with industry.
HPI is a non-profit, independent research foundation belonging to the Leibniz Association (WGL).
Federal funding is administered by the Federal Health Ministry and state funding by the
Science and Research Authority in Hamburg. Additional funding is provided by other financial sources, including industry and private donations, and is increasing in its importance.
